Description

Authentic 1873 South Carolina Rail Road Company 25-Mile Fare Ticket / Obsolete Currency Note. Issued in Charleston, SC, on July 1, 1873, this beautifully engraved note by the American Bank Note Co. features a historic steam locomotive vignette on the left and an allegorical figure on the right with a distinctive green security underprint and red serial numbers. The central punch holes are official conductor cancellation marks, proving this piece of Reconstruction-era Americana was genuinely redeemed and used in commerce. The note shows honest handling from circulation—including typical creasing, edge wear, and minor splits along the center fold line.

On the left side is the signature of J. W. Cloman (or a similar designated accounting clerk), and on the right is William J. Magrath, who served as the prominent President of the South Carolina Rail Road Company during the Reconstruction era.
