Description
This is a Persian Gulf Rupee (also known as the External Rupee). During the mid-20th century, standard Indian rupees circulated heavily as official currency in the Persian Gulf states (including Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, Oman, and the Trucial States). However, this led to massive strains on India's foreign exchange reserves due to booming illegal gold smuggling.
To completely halt smuggled domestic currency from being laundered and redeemed back to India through foreign channels, the Indian Government passed a bill in May 1959 creating this distinct "External" variant. These notes were printed in a modified orange color and carried a legal text modification stating they were payable specifically "at the Office of Issue at Bombay" instead of the typical "at any office of issue," ensuring they functioned as legal tender exclusively outside of India.
